Historic Julian
Unique in Southern California, Julian is a rustic retreat with an authentic Gold Rush era ambiance. A small town with vibrant community spirit, Julian has grand stories to tell of fame, fortune and dreams come true. The town's old storefronts stretching from one end of Main Street to the other, date back to the 1870s and offer visitors a unique combination of history and natural beauty in which to explore unspoiled and peaceful countryside.
Getting to Julian is as easy as apple pie. Just 60 scenic miles northeast of San Diego, Julian is located between the northern end of the Cuyamaca Mountains and the south slope of Volcan Mountain, just west of the Anza Borrego desert. Surrounded by uncluttered tree-lined country roads with grazing cattle and horses, fruit orchards and open meadows, Julian lies in some of California's most stunningly beautiful countryside. Following the Civil War in 1869, a group of veterans headed west and, captivated by the beauty of land, settled in what would become Julian. Gold was discovered that year in a small creek, a discovery that drew thousands of prospectors and settlers. In all, the hillsides surrounding Julian produced about $25 million in gold. By 1872, Julian counted 50 houses, three hotels, four stores, two restaurants, one schoolhouse and numerous saloons. After the gold played out, the pioneers planted apple and pear orchards to fill the economic gap of the loss of mining. Today, Julian boasts a widespread reputation for the apple pie produced from homegrown fruit by local family-owned bakeries. Julian is also the home of artists, writers and dreamers who find inspiration in the beauty and quiet of the surrounding countryside. Julian residents welcome visitors to an authentic, unpretentious town with friendly smiles and open hearts. · Gold mine tours · California Wolf Center preserve for endangered animals · Apple pie shops galore · Historic District walking tours · Carriage rides through town and the surrounding countryside · Apple orchards/fruit stands open in season · Pioneer Museum and Grosskopf House · Open artists studios · Wine tasting · Historic photo gallery in Town Hall · Two stunning scenic state parks: Sierra-green Cuyamaca Rancho and desert-pastel Anza Borrego · Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve
